The Alameda Health System Foundation announced today that Preston S. Walton has been appointed as the new President of the Foundation. A passionate and experienced leader in philanthropy, Mr. Walton will succeed Michael Gomez and will assume his new responsibilities on January 12, 2021. Mr. Gomez, the Board Chair of the Foundation, has served as Interim President since August 2020.
Mr. Walton most recently served as Executive Director for Grantmaking and Community Engagement at Kaiser Permanente, responsible for ensuring effective and efficient national deployment of grantmaking and community engagement approaches across all of Kaiser Permanente’s communities in service of its Community Health strategy. Prior to that, he served for five years as Senior Associate Vice President of Development and a member of the Leadership Team at the University of San Francisco. A large portion of his role at USF was managing the engagement and mobilization of staff, faculty, and alumni in a $300 million comprehensive campaign, the largest in the institution’s history.
“It was immediately clear that Preston would be a great new leader for the Foundation” said Danielle Coleman, Vice Chair of the AHSF Board and head of the search committee. “His broad expertise in different aspects of fundraising, his experience leading development teams in different organizational settings and his obvious passion for AHSF’s mission of Investing in Caring, Healing, Teaching, Serving All will help us move to a new level of success in supporting Alameda Health System (AHS)”.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Walton spent two years as an embedded fundraising consultant at AHSF, contributing greatly to the success of AHSF’s $24.5 million campaign to equip the new Acute Care Tower at AHS’s Highland Hospital in Oakland.
“All members of the Board who know him have long been impressed with Preston’s strategic leadership skills and his commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in all organizations in which he’s worked”, said Board Chair Gomez. “His familiarity with AHS and the Foundation as a result of his prior work with us is an added bonus, giving him the ability to hit the ground running during this most challenging time for the community and the Health System”.
Mr. Walton has a B.S. in Business Management and an M.A. in Education, both from the University of San Francisco.
